Greater Yangon Water Supply Improvement Project
(Phase 1)

Former capital Yangon and Thilawa Special Economic Zone

Former capital Yangon and Thilawa Special Economic Zone

Since 2011, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (hereinafter referred to as "Myanmar") has achieved rapid development through implementation of various reforms such as democratization of the government, strengthening of the rule of law, and measures for national reconciliation. In 2013, the Government of Japan decided to extend a new yen loan to the country for the first time in 25 years. Since then, Japan has continued to back reforms in the country and is supporting its sustainable development.

After capital relocation in 2006, Yangon still keeps its status as Myanmar's largest city and has continued to develop as the economic center of the country. However, only about 30% of the city's population has access to water through its water distribution network. Those people also suffered from short duration of water supply and poor water quality. In addition, a stable water supply to the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the suburbs of the city has also been an urgent issue. This zone has been under development since 2012 under the leadership of Japanese companies.

In November 2017, of the five packages making up the "Greater Yangon Water Supply Improvement Project (Phase 1)," our company was selected to undertake the "Installation of water pipelines in eastern Yangon and to the Thilawa Special Economic Zone." This project adopted ductile iron pipes manufactured by Kubota Corporation to lay 45 km of water transmission pipeline connecting the Lagunpyin water treatment plant in the eastern part of the city with the Thilawa Special Economic Zone.

The construction period was short, so we started by securing a large number of Myanmar workers. The details of the construction work each day covered a wide range of areas due to the presence of various obstacles such as utility poles, large trees, houses, and railways. We therefore repeated training based on detailed manuals and only carried out the construction work after confirming the transfer of Japan's high-quality infrastructure technology. This paid off and resulted in completion and delivery within the construction period in January 2020, without any problems.

This improvement of water infrastructure provided the safe and secure water supply that is indispensable for the improvement of the lives of the people of Yangon. It also responded to the rapidly increasing demand for water, especially in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone. It has been highly evaluated as a key to sustainable economic growth in the future, not only by Myanmar, but also by the various countries related to the SEZ.
